What is ‘Styling’ and Do I Need It?

Styling is the art of making a house look beautiful, function well and feel homely through the addition of ‘stuff’ to de-sterilise the space. It comes in the form of any and everything decorative; from art and window treatments, to cushions, throws and accessories.

Take a new-build for example. These new houses are built to ‘cookie-cutter’ specifications with each one following a simple template with zero customisation. Plain floors, white walls and often no window treatments. (Read: no colour and zero personality). Add furniture and you give the spaces purpose. Add styling and those rooms level up to being personalised, functional and beautiful.

The best styling says something about the homeowners; it offers a glimpse into their passions & interests, and compliments or improves their preferred way of living in a space. In a bid to cut down on unnecessary ‘clutter’, it should serve a practical purpose as well as look good!

The thing I love most is that each and every person’s home styling will differ based on their own personal needs and preferences for how they wish to use a space.

Take my own coffee table, for example.

  • The living room for me is a place of relaxation, so I have an ottoman in place of a coffee table; a place where I can put my feet up at the end of the day. The ottoman is made in my favourite colour and in a soft fabric, that is luxurious to rest against and makes me feel good.

  • To keep things practical, I style my ottoman with a tray- somewhere to put down my morning coffee and evening wine.

  • I love plants, so naturally add greenery.

  • To help me unwind and to enhance my relaxation time / space, I keep a candle handy on the tray.

  • I also like to include a book / books in subjects I’m interested in to both A) remind me to slow down and get off my damn phone B) act as a conversation starter for when I have guests over.

How might this translate to other areas of the home?

Here are a few basic examples…

Window treatments:

In the case of window treatments, how you prefer to live in the space might determine whether you opt to have blinds or curtains…

  • Do you require total darkness at night? A heavier, longer curtain in a blackout material could be the winner here.

  • Does the sunlight stream in through the day, making the room too hot?- Maybe a double track with light-filtering sheer could be of use.

  • Want to create a soft, delicate, relaxing vibe? Plump for curtains over blinds for sure.

Dining room:

  • Love to entertain? A simple, low arrangement (so you can still see your guests across the table!) or multiple items that can be divided up as required would be handy (think, low plants, candles etc.)

  • Does your table double as a workspace for the kids to do their homework? Stay clear of anything too tall or fragile in case of accidental knocks. A runner or some pretty coasters would make a great practical addition.

Entrance hallway:

  • A rug or runner might help protect your floor from the elements and from constant high foot-traffic. Opt for something low pile so it runs easily under the door and doesn’t cause a trip hazard.

  • If you have the space, a mirror-topped shelf or console table makes a great surface for storing your keys and any other last-minute grabs. Hooks and baskets are great for containing front door clutter like shoes, jackets and brollies. A bench or ottoman could offer a practical place to sit and tie your laces.

For every space there is a well-considered styling solution…
