5 Reasons Why Small Living Is Better Living

Tiny homes, shoeboxes, pint-glasses, lily-pads… however you label it, small homes are my favourite kind of home. They hold far more appeal to me for a whole host of reasons… here’s my top 5!

1.    They require less cleaning & are lower care!

It’s pretty damn obvious, but smaller homes are way easier and quicker to clean and maintain. While larger homes take heaps of time, energy, and effort to keep on top of, smaller homes take a snap of Mary Poppin’s fingers to sort, giving you your weekends back! You’re welcome.

2.    They are mentally far less strenuous

With less space comes the ability to hoard less stuff. The result of which is hugely mentally freeing, given that the more we own, the more our possessions tend to own us. Downsizing and removing excess baggage allows room only for the stuff you love and need.

The accumulation of ‘things for things sake’ has a tendency to zap our mental energy as well as taking up our physical space. Buying and living small is freeing! Join the movement.

3.    They are kinder to the planet… and your wallet!

With less area to heat in the winter and cool in the summer, smaller homes are generally more energy-efficient than their larger, more voluminous rellies.

They also tend to have fewer lights and less space for other home appliances too, saving you big on background operational costs. Littles add up to a lot.

 4.    They encourage socialisation

With nowhere to escape to *insert evil laugh here*, smaller homes encourage family and partnership bonding. Not to mention you can ask each other things in person, rather than yelling them down a long hallway or up a flight-or-two of stairs.

Granted, if you’re tackling a toddler right now that you’d love to have a little distance from you’ll likely beg to differ, but shared meals at the dinner table and movies together on the couch as a family have got to be a positive in what can be such a disconnected world these days, right? I’m all for it. Are you?

5.    They’re cosy AF

It’s no big secret I’m a fan of Hyyge; the art of living cosy. Candles, blankets and pot-luck dinners with friends…. The cracking of a log fire…. Cuddling a mug of hot chocolate… Smaller homes are basically the makeup of this vibe in four-walls format as far as I’m concerned!
